The outdoor teacher

About Nikki

Nikki has had over 25 years experience of teaching outdoor learning. After leaving school she worked with Birmingham City Council/Solihull Council Ranger service delivering curriculum based outdoor learning to a variety of schools at their countryside sites.

After studying for an HND in Countryside Management, she worked at an Outdoor Education Centre owned by Sandwell Council. Teaching outdoor learning linked to the curriculum in History, Geography, Science and art, to a wide range of abilities and ages.

Nikki then worked for the National Trust for 3 years setting up an outdoor education programme for schools based at one of their properties.

In recent years she has created and maintains a kitchen garden and outdoor learning space at a primary school, as well as regularly teaching hands on outdoor sessions to the classes and running an after school gardening club.

Nikki also oversaw the design and construction of a school show garden at the Shrewsbury Flower Show 2019, which went on to win two awards. She has also enabled the school to become a RHS five star gardening school.

Mission statement

Every child should have the opportunity to connect with the natural environment, through their learning.

The hands on approach promotes deeper learning through memorable, contextualised experiences which pupils will remember for a lifetime. Outdoor learning engages all pupils regardless of academic ability, in their learning.

It also has a proven, positive impact on children’s social, emotional, mental, and physical health and wellbeing.
